Andalusia Day in Nerja
Nerja celebrates Andalusia Day every 28 February with the raising of the flag and the official ceremony in Plaza de Andalucía, in the Las Protegidas neighbourhood.
Andalusia Day is celebrated on 28 February, a regional public holiday commemorating the 1980 autonomy referendum.
The official ceremony
The town council holds the official ceremony in the morning in Plaza de Andalucía, in the Las Protegidas neighbourhood (at 10.15 am in 2026). Each year a distinguished local resident raises the Andalusian flag; the manifesto of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces is read, and pupils from the schools of Nerja and Maro, with young people from the Las Protegidas residents’ association, read poems dedicated to the eight provinces.
A good day for a stroll
As it is a public holiday, it is a good day to explore Nerja without the summer crowds. Bear in mind that many shops close or open with special hours.
