Fiestas of San Antón in Maro

Maro honours its patron, San Antón, in mid-January: some fifty bonfires in the streets, a big bonfire in the square, the blessing of animals, hot chocolate and a procession with fireworks.

The San Antón festivities are one of Maro’s oldest traditions (recorded in the 17th century). They are held on the weekend closest to 17 January, the patron’s day, organised by the Maro festivities committee and the town council.

The night of the bonfires

The highlight is the night of the “lumbres”: at dusk local people light bonfires in the village streets (about fifty in 2026) and gather round them with family, friends and visitors to share local food, while music goes from fire to fire. Later the big bonfire in the church square is lit, and there are prizes for the best bonfires.

The patron’s day

San Antón’s day starts with mass at the Iglesia de las Maravillas and the blessing of animals at the church door. In the afternoon there is music, dancing and hot chocolate in the square, and at nightfall the procession goes through the streets amid rockets and traditional fireworks wheels.

In 2026 the festivities were on Friday 16 (bonfires) and Saturday 17 January (mass, blessing, hot chocolate and procession). Source: Nerja Town Council.
