San Juan Night in Nerja
Noche de San Juan marks the start of summer in Nerja with bonfires on the beach, the burning of the Júa at midnight, fireworks and live music on Playa de Burriana.
The Noche de San Juan is the festival that marks the start of summer in Nerja. Every 23rd June, thousands of people gather on the municipality's beaches to celebrate the shortest night of the year with bonfires, music and the tradition of swimming at midnight to purify themselves.
Playa de Burriana, the epicentre of the festival
The main event is held on Playa de Burriana, where the Ayuntamiento organises a programme with live music and the star attraction: the burning of the Júa (a symbolic effigy) at midnight, accompanied by fireworks over the sea.
Municipal regulations
The Ayuntamiento de Nerja sets rules to ensure safety and protect the environment. Bonfires are only allowed on certain beaches (not on Burriana, Torrecilla or Maro), must be made in metal structures and may not contain toxic materials. Camping is permitted from 20:00 until midday the following day on the authorised beaches.
