Frigiliana

Just 15 minutes from Nerja, the whitewashed hill village of Frigiliana is regularly voted Spain's most beautiful — winding lanes, Moorish history and spectacular mountain views.

Frigiliana is a white village in the Axarquía, just 6 km from Nerja, 300 metres up on the slopes of the Sierra Almijara with views of the sea. In 2015 it became the first town in Málaga province to join the association of The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, and its old Moorish quarter is one of the best preserved in Andalusia.

From Nerja you can get there by bus, by car or on foot, and half a day is enough to see it. Here is what to see, how to get there, where to park and what to eat.

What to see in Frigiliana

The Moorish quarter. The old town: steep cobbled lanes, steps, whitewashed houses full of flowerpots and corners such as Calle Real and Calle Hernando el Darra. It is pedestrian-only; wear comfortable shoes.
The ceramic panels of the Morisco revolt. Twelve tiled panels put up in 1982 on the walls of the quarter tell the story of the Morisco uprising and the battle of the Peñón de Frigiliana in 1569. Following them is a good way to explore the village.
The Church of San Antonio de Padua, completed in 1676, at the top of the old town.
El Ingenio, the Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana (16th century), the manor house of the Manrique de Lara family, known for its sugar-cane honey (miel de caña) factory.
The Fuente Vieja (17th century), with the coat of arms of the lords of the village, and the fountain of the three cultures on Calle del Inquisidor, with the cross, the crescent and the Star of David.
The Castillo de Lízar. Little remains of the 9th-century Moorish fortress destroyed in 1569, but the hill is a fine viewpoint over the village and the coast.
The Palacio del Apero (17th century), once the lords' granary and now the Tourist Office, and the Reales Pósitos of 1767.

History

1568
The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations, having been colonised by Phoenicians and Romans in the centuries BC and later by the Arabs in the Middle Ages. During the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, a fortified castle was built above the town. During the Alpujarras Rebellion of 1568, which spread across much of southern Andalusia, a fierce battle was fought in Frigiliana that ended with the complete destruction of the Arab population.
  1. Almost 4,000 Moriscos (Arabs who had been baptised as Christians) unsuccessfully defended the castle against the Spaniards. It is said that some of the Moors threw themselves down rather than be killed or captured by the Spaniards. Afterwards, the castle was demolished stone by stone, and remains of it can still be seen.
Twelve ceramic plaques located on the walls of the old quarter depict the history of the Moriscos of Frigiliana and the events of the final battle.

Where to park

Car park at the entrance to Frigiliana

Frigiliana's old town is pedestrian-only and its streets are very narrow: leave the car outside. At the entrance to the village there is a paid underground public car park on several levels, a few minutes' walk from the centre. At weekends, on public holidays and in summer it fills up early, so arrive early. You can also park along the access road outside the village, following the signs. In high season the bus from Nerja saves the hassle.
