Molino de Papel Beach

Pebble beach at the mouth of the Río de la Miel, with a freshwater pool next to the sea. No facilities; a 5-10 minute walk down from the parking area.

Molino de Papel Beach (Playa del Molino de Papel), also known as Río de la Miel beach, lies at the mouth of the Río de la Miel, about 3 km east of Maro, inside the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area. It is named after the paper mill that worked by the river from the end of the 18th century (1799) until the early 20th, and the Río de la Miel watchtower stands above it. It is a beach of large pebbles, with no facilities and few people, known for the freshwater pool the river forms a few steps from the sea.

Getting down

You park on a dirt area, next to the Natural Area information board, at the end of a stretch of the old road that leaves the N-340 (details below, in “How to get there”). The access track has deep potholes and in 2025 several low cars scraped their undersides or got punctures: if yours is low, leave it at the start. From the parking area, walk along the wide track that passes the old mill and runs down beside the river to the beach: 5-10 minutes and easy. Do not go down the bank that drops straight from the parking area: it is very steep and people have fallen.

Facilities: none

There is no lifeguard, beach bar, showers, toilets or bins, and there is hardly any shade. Bring water, food, a parasol, water shoes and, rather than a towel, a chair or a thick mat: the stones are big. For food, the nearest places are in Maro, 5 minutes by car, such as the Hogar y Centro Social de Maro (closed on Mondays).

What it is like

The shore is large rounded pebbles, with no sand, and getting into the water there are slippery stones: water shoes are essential. The water is usually very clean and clear. Where the river meets the beach, a few placed stones hold back a cold freshwater pool, less than a metre deep, where you can bathe with the sea in front of you; depending on the time of year it holds more or less water, and some days it is less clean. In summer there is seaweed some days and wild boar are seen in the bushes: keep food out of their reach. Nudism is common. It is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.

No diving: in front of the beach and to the east there is a seabed protection zone where the Andalusian government does not allow diving, either with scuba gear or breath-hold, as its sign states. About 800 metres east is Las Alberquillas Beach, and to the west, Maro Beach; all the coves in the area are in our guide to Maro beaches.

In the Mediterranean the tide is very small: today the difference between high and low tide is only about 40 cm, so it barely affects swimming.

Swimming conditions

Slightly larger variation than usual for the Mediterranean. Check the low-tide times for more beach space.

You park on a dirt area next to the Natural Area board, at the end of a stretch of the old road that turns right off the N-340 (towards Almería), about 3 km after the Maro roundabout. It is free but has few spaces. The access track has deep potholes: with a low car, park at the start and walk. Do not leave anything on show in the car, as there have been break-ins. From the parking area it is a 5-10 minute walk down to the beach along the mill track.

How to get to Molino de Papel Beach

By car: from Nerja, take the N-340 towards Almería. Go past the roundabout for Maro and the Nerja Cave and carry on for about 3 km. Before the bridge over the Río de la Miel, a stretch of the old road turns off to the right with very little signposting; follow it to the dirt parking area with the Natural Area board. It is about 6 km and 10 minutes from the centre of Nerja.

On foot from the parking area (5-10 minutes):

  1. Follow the wide track that leaves the parking area heading east, towards the river.
  2. Go past the old paper mill (it is lived in today: respect the property).
  3. Walk down beside the river to the beach; the freshwater pool is at the river mouth.

Do not go down the bank that drops straight from the parking area to the beach: it is very steep and dangerous.

By kayak: from Maro Beach, about 2 km paddling east.
