Nerja VG Hostal Boutique is at Calle Pintada 74, in the centre of Nerja: the Balcón de Europa is about 500 metres away and Carabeo and Calahonda beaches 400-500 metres. It is one of the best-rated places to stay in town: 4.8 on Google and 5 on Tripadvisor.

Rooms. Spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean, with air conditioning, a desk, coffee maker, fridge, safe, flat-screen TV and a bathroom with shower. All are non-smoking.

The best part. For somewhere right in the centre, it has two unusual extras: an outdoor pool with a terrace and sun loungers, and private covered parking. The staff are among the most praised aspects, as is the quiet.

Good to know. The drawbacks are minor: pillows that don't suit everyone, no kettle and the odd problem with hot water. No pets. In August, from around €200 a night. Compare it with others in guesthouses in Nerja.
