El Salón Beach

A 200-metre cove west of the Balcón de Europa, with fishermen's cottages, reached down a ramp beside El Salvador church. Lifeguard, showers and sunloungers.

El Salón Beach (Playa El Salón) is the cove to the west of the Balcón de Europa, past La Caletilla: about 200 metres of dark sand and gravel between the cliffs of the old town, with old fishermen's cottages set against the rock. It is about a 5-minute walk from Plaza de España, but you reach it down a hidden alley beside the El Salvador church, and for decades it was the beach of the people who lived in the centre.

Getting down to the beach

There is only one way down: an alley beside El Salvador church that ends in a fairly steep zigzag ramp down to the sand, with no steps. A wheelchair can only go down with someone helping, as the slope is steep and the surface is not non-slip.

Facilities

In season there is a lifeguard, showers, toilets (one adapted) and a small beach bar with drinks, ice cream and sandwiches. Sunloungers with parasols are for hire: in summer 2026, about €12 a day for two according to visitors, and it is worth booking as there are not many. For a proper meal, the bars and restaurants of the centre are 5 minutes away. Dogs are not allowed.

What it is like

The shore is dark sand and gravel, and the water is usually calm and very clear, with fish around the rocks at either end. At the foot of the cliff stand the little white cottages the fishermen used as stores, now homes. It is small and fills up in summer; in the afternoon the cliff puts it in shade early. With an easterly wind or a high tide, the water can reach almost to the foot of the cliff, leaving little sand.

To the east, below the Balcón, are La Caletilla and Calahonda; above them, on a viewpoint, the Chanquete statue. To the west, about a 10-minute walk through the centre, is La Torrecilla. Compare them in our guide to Nerja's beaches.

Where to park

The nearest is the underground car park in Plaza de España (Balcón de Europa car park), paid, right next to the alley down: about 350 metres to the sand, 5 minutes. For free, the Giner de los Ríos car park, with about 130 spaces, some 400 metres away (6 minutes), which fills up early in summer.

How to get to El Salón Beach

On foot: from Plaza de España, next to the Balcón de Europa, go to El Salvador church. Beside it an alley leads down towards the sea and ends in a zigzag ramp down to the sand. It is the only way down to the beach; it takes about 5 minutes.

Way down to El Salón beach along the alley beside El Salvador church

By car: the centre is mostly pedestrianised; leave the car at the underground car park in Plaza de España, at the top of the alley, or for free at Giner de los Ríos (see «Where to park»).

By bus: the town bus stops in the centre are a few minutes' walk from Plaza de España.

The ramp is steep: with a wheelchair you can only go down with help. If you need step-free access, La Torrecilla and Burriana have an accessible point.
