San Miguel Church

The Iglesia de San Miguel is one of the most notable spots in Nerja. Located in Plaza de Andalucía, to the north of Nerja’s historic centre, this Baroque Mudéjar-style church is a place steeped in history and tradition. Admission is completely free and opening hours are usually in the morning.

The Iglesia de San Miguel is the parish church of the Las Protegidas neighbourhood, on Plaza de Andalucía, north of the historic centre. It is a modern church in a simple popular style: it was built in 1977 and opened on 7 October 1978, dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, Nerja’s patron saint.

The square in front of it is the heart of the neighbourhood: it hosts the Veladilla de San Miguel in September, the Andalusia Day ceremony and, on a Sunday before Christmas, the Las Protegidas living nativity, a Provincial Fiesta of Tourist Singularity.

Plaza de Andalucía, where the church stands, is a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the local atmosphere among plants and flowers. Discovering the Iglesia de San Miguel means delving into the most authentic and everyday side of Nerja’s old town.
