The Cueva del Lobo Marino (“sea lion cave”) is a sea cave carved by the waves into the Nerja cliffs, past the eastern end of Burriana beach on the way to Maro. There is no access by land: you can only reach it from the water, by kayak, paddleboard or swimming when the sea is calm, which is why it is a classic stop on kayak trips along the coast.
Inside, the rock shows the shapes left by erosion, and the water around it is good for snorkelling, with fish, sea urchins and seaweed clinging to the rocks.
How to get to the Cueva del Lobo Marino
The easiest way is a guided kayak trip from Nerja to Maro, which usually stops there, or to hire a kayak or paddleboard on Burriana beach and paddle east along the coast. Swimming there is only for strong swimmers, in calm seas and staying close to the shore. More ideas in beaches for kayaking and snorkelling in Nerja.
Safety tips
⚠️ Only go when the sea is calm: with waves, the cave entrance is dangerous. Do not jump from the rocks, wear water shoes to stand on them and, if you go by kayak on your own, wear a life jacket and tell someone your route.
